Who Really Needs Protection?

There’s a lot of talk about "protecting people" today. Maybe we as investors should get protection of our own.
 
Now, if you think for one second that real estate investors are not under attack, I would invite you to consider the following:
 
Last Wednesday, when the president announced his mortgage/foreclosure bailout for irresponsible individuals (those are my words) whose homes are being foreclosed on, he pointed a finger at those nasty "speculators" who rushed into many markets buying low and selling high.
 
Now, you know that I have no time, interest or sympathy for anyone who had little knowledge of the market, who rushed in and bought low, sold high...until the very last speculator standing got left holding a very smelly brown paper bag.
 
But it seems that anyone who purchased a second home or a legitimate investment property is being painted with this "speculator" brush, too!
 
Of course, we cannot count on the media to spotlight you or I as successful investors...because we aren't supposed to be experiencing success in this market. In spite of this, we take action and succeed.
 
Next threat? We have ACORN. If you don't what ACORN is, it might be helpful to find out who they are, what their agenda is and what they are up to... because you as an investor are going to have to deal with them for at least the next four years.
 
So, let's look at what ACORN has been up to in Baltimore, Maryland... and other urban centers across the country.
 
They have been training, at taxpayers' expense, "activists" to commit acts of civil disobedience to assist individuals who have lost their homes to foreclosure to regain access to those foreclosed homes.
 
Now, I guess that if it could be proven that the foreclosure was the result of real, and I mean real, predatory lending (the kind where the person buying the house was not allowed to read the paperwork, or wasn't allowed to have an attorney review everything), I could be more sympathetic to what is happening out there.
 
But, as you know, if you've bought even one house, most closings take forever, because the closing attorney goes through every piece of paper with the buyer to ensure they understand what they are getting into.
 
Now, last week, with the help of ACORN activists, a woman in Baltimore reclaimed her house. To enter the house they had to cut the lock... something they did with camera crews and reporters all over the place.
 
Nice, don't you think?
 
The good news is that the new owner (I am pretty sure this person is an investor as the house was trashed and needed a lot of work) has filed criminal trespassing charges and the ACORN leader turned himself in yesterday.
 
So... you would think that, that would be the end of it. And it might be, but I doubt it.
 
But here's my real point:
 
It is almost impossible to get the true story out of conventional media outlets about why the foreclosed homeowner lost her house - the true "back story."
 
So, here is what I wanted to share with you:
 
I would invite you to follow this link to read all about how this homeowner lost her house... and what we did not hear from our dedicated media types. It’s frightening.
 
Until you read the story, you might think I'm being a bit tough on this "poor" lady. But it seems she made as much as many of the speculators off of real estate.
 
OK, so why am I sharing all of this with you?
 
Simple: you and I, as real estate investors, may become targets soon enough.
 
Why? Because it is no longer politically correct to provide quality housing to individuals and profit from it. Instead, it is better that we just pay our taxes to bail others out so that they may stay in homes they didn't qualify for and couldn't afford in the first place. Or that they pull cash out of, until they can't afford it.
 
If you are not a part of group of investors where you can seek support and have access to real-time information about these changes... perhaps now is a good time to be thinking about that action.
 
We are in for some very exciting times. Profits are going to continue to be plentiful. But we must be ever vigilant to protect our livelihood.
