"Roll Out Of Bed" With A New Vision In 2009...

The article I just finished writing for the January issue of The Real Estate Mastermind Newsletter focused on what you would expect from me... setting goals for the New Year. (You can read that article here.)

If you've been with me since the Seeds of Success started, you may be pretty tired of hearing from me... every single year (this would be year three) that you must have a set of goals... and they must be written down in order for you to succeed.

Hopefully, you've written them down by now for 2009. But, I have to admit it goes way beyond just having them and writing them down...to make them happen.

First and foremost, you must have the desire to actually accomplish these goals. And when I say "desire," I mean the "you really want it" kind of desire.

Fellow Club founder Steve Cook refers to this as "having absolute clarity regarding what you want in life." And, more importantly, what you want your life to look like, 5 years from today. (Hint - he did not say "how much money you want to have in your life, but what you want "in life.")

Why is this important? Simple... and let me use the following example:

The other day, I sat down for lunch with a gentleman I met in December, at the Prisoner's Aide Awards Luncheon. He had a real gift for writing moving poetry, a talent he exhibited at that event. He is looking to become a professional speaker. I volunteered to help him get started as a speaker, in my extra "free time."

We were talking about how people really get motivated. At one point, this gentleman (we'll call him "John" for the purpose of this story) started to tell me about what he did the weekend before.

To pay the bills, John does yard work & landscaping. A neighbor of his offered him some cash to clean up that neighbor's yard. It wasn't much - not nearly the usual rate John charged. He could use the cash, but he wasn't excited about doing this job early on Sunday morning.

At this point in the story, I jumped in and said, "I bet you had a hard time getting out of bed for $10 an hour on a Sunday morning.

"In fact," John replied, "I didn't get out of bed at all. I slept in, and told the neighbor later that I wouldn't be able to do the job."

John's story illustrated my point beautifully. He got what I was communicating to him about motivation - and hopefully - you see what my point was too:

People have a heck of a hard time getting out of bed to earn a buck - whether it's $10 an hour or even to do a deal that will earn you $10,000 or even $30,000.

This may be hard to believe if you are strapped for cash right now. But I can tell you that my fellow Club coaches and I see it...every day. Money alone is not enough of a reason to make a change in your life. "Money" will not keep you in the game when the going gets rough. And the going always is tough when you first get going in a new venture.

It all goes to getting absolutely clear about what you want your life to look like. In the story above, John can easily get motivated to work on his speaking business - but getting out of bed to do work is MUCH more challenging. John's motivation comes from how he ultimately wants his life to look.

Can you see the crucial contrast in this story? On the one hand, we all know that that we need to earn an income. Yet, how many of us would work for a living if our lives didn't depend on having it? On the other hand, when we can see clearly what we want to DO with our lives (and making money is of secondary importance), there is little that can stop us from living that way and achieving our goals.

Now... how does this apply to you as a real estate investor? The simple answer is always the best!

I speak with so many current and new investors, and the responses I receive the most to the question of, "Why have you chosen Real Estate Investing?" is "I hate my job" or "to make more money."

It is rare that I hear... "because I want to be able to spend my life in a very specific way, doing very specific things" and then, in great detail, this person explains what their vision is and how real estate investing supports that.

These individuals "get it."

They know that the vision they have for their life, now and in the future, will be supported by real estate investing.  They also know that, as with anything, being a real estate investor will not always be fun and games. They know that, with their vision, supported by specific goals, they will be able to weather these ups and downs…because they want that vision!

So... as you find yourself developing your real estate investing goals for 2009, take a few moments - or even a few days (whatever it takes) - to consider how you want your life to really look and then define how real estate can support this life vision.

I wish you the most in prosperity in 2009.

The debate over LED tube vs fluorescent tubes always teeters at the cost argument. When comparing the upfront cost of one LED T5 Tube to one fluorescent tube, fluorescent wins. However, when you consider volume discounts and the lifespan of LEDs, the scale leans the opposite direction. Let’s compare the costs of each.
